Post-implementation evaluation is key to IT success

Avanade examines the value of IT investment to UK businesses

November 29, 2007

Only one in four companies measures the success of IT projects after implementation, according to a white paper from Avanade. The paper, based on research commissioned by the company, found that almost half report a gap between the development and operational support functions within IT.

Entitled “Technology for technology’s sake,” the paper examines the challenges and value of IT investment in some of Britain’s leading organisations.

It found that almost a quarter of companies fail to carry out effective assessments post-implementation.

“Because of insufficient assessments, organisations have a limited ability to track the real cost and impact of new systems at the enterprise level,” explained Brent Kronenberg, director of Enterprise Service Solutions at Avanade. “Because cost is such a key issue, companies should be measuring the financial impact of all technology implications.”

He continued: “The findings of the report show a gap between implementation and operational output. This can only increase the cost of support, slow deployment and perpetuate poor understanding of systems.”

One of the most important problems uncovered by the report is that 40 per cent of companies report a gap between the development and operational support functions within IT.

“Businesses clearly understand the value of IT as they are willing to spend money on developing and updating their IT systems,” said Kronenberg. “But organisations are failing to receive the business benefits that the investment promised. Post-implementation assessments will enable companies to achieve optimum levels of performance, so they can see a real return on their investments.”
