Staycations top travel trends for January 2010

Budgetplaces.com reveals top five destinations last month and sees 20 per cent increase in Brits holidaying in the UK

UK - February 03, 2010

The UK is creeping out of recession but British holidaymakers are still reining in the pennies by staying close to home.

Statistics from Budgetplaces.com reveal that London was the top travel destination for UK consumers last month. The online booking platform saw a 20 per cent year-on-year increase in the popularity of the UK capital compared to January 2009.

Further highlighting the increase in Brits looking for a break without travelling too far, Dublin was found to be the second favourite destination, jumping up from fourth place in January last year.

January figures show the Pound strengthening against the Euro making a European get away better value than it has been for over four months. Budgetplaces.com is predicting that more Brits will take advantage of this, with destinations such as Barcelona already looking strong for February.

The top five destinations for January 2010 according to Budgetplaces.com were as follows:

1.    London

2.    Dublin

3.    Barcelona

4.    Rome

5.    Paris

Executive quote

“UK travellers have realised that a trip away doesn’t have to cost the earth,” said John Erceg, founder and managing director of Budgetplaces.com.

“People still travelled to Europe last year in spite of the unfavourable exchange rate, they just adopted a more cautious approach by doing their research to have more fun for less money,” he added. “The emergence of this do it yourself travel mentality is something that will stay with the industry long after the economy fully recovers.”
