Desktop virtualisation to drive agility in 2009

Ten per cent figure set to skyrocket, says Centralis

UK - December 09, 2008

One-third if UK companies have already virtualised at least sixty per cent of their server infrastructure. For the majority if organisations however less than ten per cent of desktops have so far followed suit.

According to a survey that questioned over 200 IT decision makers, the need for flexibility was the main business driver behind moving to virtualised platforms.

Carried out by leading independent consultancy Centralis, the results show that while the benefits of virtualisation are well understood, most UK organisations are still reluctant to commit to large-scale virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployments.

Centralis is predicting however, that this will change over the next year. Increasing numbers of businesses will seek to increase agility across their operations, centralise IT resources and tighten security as they look to improve competitive position and avoid the worst effects of the current economic turmoil.

The results also indicate that organisations are beginning to expand policies beyond just R&D to production systems, where virtualisation policies have been traditionally deployed.

Executive quote

“Virtualisation is unstoppable, but currently wide-scale deployment of virtual desktops is very much in the slow lane,” said Ewen Anderson, managing director at Centralis. “What the figures suggest is that server virtualisation is now benefiting mainstream production systems. With organisations focused so intently on business efficiency, 2009 is likely to see the desktop accelerate to follow a similar path as the enterprise looks to take control of this most dispersed and expensive computing resource.”
