Public sector IT managers drive cost cutting measures and promote innovation
Public sector IT managers are under twice as much pressure to reduce operational costs as their private sector counterparts, according to research by consultancy Centralis.
One in two IT departments stated they’d been tasked by senior management with helping to curb their organisation’s operating costs, compared with less than a quarter in the private sector.
The findings reveal that increasing workforce flexibility and enhancing remote working capabilities are viewed as the most effective ways of making savings across an organisation. More than half (56%) of public sector IT departments stated they will focus on such initiatives for the remainder of 2009.
The five IT initiatives that topped the agenda within the public sector were:
1. Increasing workforce flexibility and remote working capabilities – 56%
2. Refreshing desktop or laptop estates – 28%
3. Upgrading operating systems – 21%
4. Improving data centre performance – 18%
Reviewing business continuity and disaster recovery systems – 18%
The research also suggests that while more than half of all IT projects within the public sector are being driven from the top down, one in three IT departments is in fact now driving innovation within the public sector from the bottom up.
Executive quote
Ewen Anderson, managing director of Centralis commented, “It comes as no surprise that the public sector now finds itself under pressure to reduce costs and I.T. spend is an obvious target for savings.”
“But this can also be seen as an opportunity to invest in increased agility. Aligning I.T. capabilities with organisational goals such as shared services, business continuity and flexible working will deliver significant overall cost savings and help to meet a wide range of operational targets, not least those around carbon emission reductions as well” he added.
