Execs choose BlackBerry as their perfect partner this Valentine’s Day

~ 72 per cent of executives admit to ‘loving’ their BlackBerry ~

February 13, 2008

A survey of senior managers, by Cognos, an IBM company, has revealed that “love me, love my BlackBerry” prevails this Valentine’s day.

42 per cent of executives have admitted they will check their BlackBerry while out with loved ones on February 14. 25 per cent say they will be tempted to check it secretly, but will try not to.

Senior managers were asked if they love or hate their BlackBerrys, and seven out of 10 admit they love it. They explained that the mobile device allows them to keep constantly up-to-date with important work information such as business reports. 15 per cent also said they can’t be without it because they can check sports scores and shop online while on the move.

Unfortunately, like most things, the relationship has its ups and downs. One quarter claimed to hate their BlackBerry. Half of these executives claimed the main reason was because they were frustrated that they couldn’t access all the business information they needed, when they wanted, via their mobile device. 38 per cent admitted they hate it because they find they cannot ‘switch off’ from their work.

“Business and decision-making increasingly happens on the go. Executives rely on mobile working devices, like BlackBerrys, to keep them in touch with their work and critical information, at all times, therefore improving their job performance,” commented Roy Lee, a director at Cognos.

“BlackBerrys are not loved because they are just status symbols or because they are pretty gadgets. The content you can access on your BlackBerry, or ‘what’s inside’, can be the difference between loving and hating it.”

“From this research it is no wonder that, whatever the relationship, the BlackBerry is the essential life partner of today’s busy executive,” he concluded.
