Secure backup scores top marks for Stockton schools

Iron Mountain Digital’s backup solution secures pupil and staff data across 80 primary, secondary and special schools

UK - September 18, 2008

Stockton-on-Tees Local Authority (LA) will protect student and staff information with a region-wide electronic backup solution from Storage-as-a-Service provider Iron Mountain Digital (IMD)

The Connected Backup for PC and Server solutions will provide automated and secure offsite backup of all server data for the region’s 80 schools. This will replace the current onsite tape backups that each school creates individually, and will ensure data is protected should local backups fail or be damaged.

As the solution is centrally managed, staff at the region’s primary and special schools can leave regular backups to be created automatically, providing more classroom and lesson preparation time. The technicians at the 14 secondary schools will be able to manage their school’s own backups, should they wish.

The solution is already in place for 30 Primary Schools and 4 Secondary Schools and will be rolled out across the rest of the schools before the end of the summer holidays by Stockton LA.

“This is the first time we have implemented a region-wide backup strategy, and the benefits to both the LA and schools are extremely reassuring,” said Andrea Warburton, Schools ICT Support Team Manager, Stockton-on-Tees LA. “The solution will ensure that all data generated by each school is protected and stored securely at an offsite location – leaving teachers and education staff more time to concentrate on classroom priorities.”

“Protecting student and staff data is a critical process for schools, whether there is a dedicated technician onsite or not,” said Nick Cater, head of Northern Europe, Iron Mountain Digital. “Simply relying on manual onsite tape backups cannot deliver a robust, long-term strategy for data protection. Moving this process to an electronic format is more cost effective, resilient and reduces the need for human resource.”
