From laptop to desktop with Kensington docks

new range of docking stations connects laptops with peripherals

October 09, 2007

Kensington, the mobile computer accessories provider, has launched a new range of universal docking stations that give laptop computers desktop functionality. The range includes docks that provide excellent video performance, give additional USB ports, raise the laptop’s screen to the best viewing height and even keep the computer cool.

The docks are designed to support the growing body of laptop-only users as they seek to use their portable PCs when working for longer periods of time. The range includes:

sd200v: Notebook Expansion Dock with Video, which enables the user to improve productivity by turning their laptop into a desktop complete with two screens, thanks to the unique ‘DualView’ technology from DisplayLink that means the monitor can either ‘clone’ or ‘extend’ the laptop’s screen. All the peripherals are connected with a single USB plug. The mini-tower design takes up less space on the desk.

sd100: Notebook Expansion Dock, which uses one USB plug to connect multiple peripherals to the laptop, so that the user can connect their printer, keyboard, Ethernet network and even 2.1 speakers without using additional USB ports, speeding up the laptop’s conversion to desktop status. The ‘hot plug’ feature means the laptop doesn’t need to be restarted to add more peripherals, and the always on USB ports powered even when your notebook is turned off or disconnected means you can charge an iPod or SmartPhone overnight.

sd100s: Notebook Expansion Dock with Stand, which lifts the laptop screen to the right height with a SmartFit stand, and connects it to the peripherals with one USB plug. The dock is detachable for situations where the stand is not required.

Notebook Stand with USB Hub,
includes a stand that lifts the user’s laptop to the best viewing position. Set up is easy, requiring twp simple steps. It has a built-in copy holder with a translucent window, so that a multimedia IR remote can still be used to control the laptop. The USB hub adds a 2.0 four-port hub to the SmartFit stand, to support all high-speed peripherals.

Notebook Stand with SmartFit,
which lifts the laptop screen to the right height. Just the stand element, it works in conjunction with the docks to extend the functionality of the laptop.

Rebecca Bird, European product manager for Kensington’s Connect It products, commented: “Both business and personal computer users are increasingly choosing laptops over desktops, but that’s not to say they don’t expect – and need – desktop functionality.”

“Having the screen at the right height, enjoying instant and easy connectivity to peripherals – and having the ability to use a monitor in conjunction with your laptop – will improve the computing experience. With this range of docks, people can choose the best way for them to get what they need from their laptop.”

Kensington’s range of docks and stands cost from £19.99 to £89.99, and are available from major IT resellers including Misco and PC World (catalogue and online). They are compatible with any PC laptop with a USB port, and are optimised for Vista-ready machines.
