Failure to backup precious digital photos causes post-break blues

~ Kroll Ontrack® warns that holidaymakers could be at risk of losing magic moments ~

August 26, 2008

Over one third (36 per cent) of people have lost holiday photos from a memory card without having a backup, according to research from Kroll Ontrack [1].

As UK holidaymakers are returning from summer breaks, Kroll Ontrack, the world’s leader in data recovery through its Ontrack™ Data Recovery services, is warning that precious digital photos could be consigned to the data graveyard if users fail to download them to their computer or back them up on another storage device.

In addition, more than half (54 per cent) of those surveyed on average take between seven and 30 days to transfer photo files from a camera to a computer or other medium – significantly increasing the chances of data loss.

To help reduce the chances of holiday memories being lost for good, the expert engineers at Kroll Ontrack have put together five top tips to help consumers take better care of their photos and ensure that they are still accessible in the future.

1. Keep memory cards in your camera or a protective case until it is possible to make a copy.

2. If travelling for a long period of time, ensure digital photos are backed up to a portable device such as USB drive or CD in addition to another media, such as an online storage site.

3. Check the quality of backups before deleting the original photos to make sure all files have been copied correctly.

4. After returning from your trip, immediately transfer digital photos from your digital camera to your computer or other storage device such as an external hard drive.

5. If files are lost, seek the advice of an expert immediately; do not try to recover the files yourself, as this is likely cause further damage.

Executive quote

“We receive hundreds of requests every year from people who have lost holiday photos and are desperate to recover them,” explains Ciaran Farrell, business development at Kroll Ontrack Ireland. “Downloading and making a backup of digital photos is essential. The longer photos are left on a memory card, the higher the risk of them being lost, damaged or of the card being overwritten. Most people now use digital cameras; they need to realise that like any technology it can fail, but by taking simple preventative steps, loss can be minimised. The simple message is to think ahead and avoid becoming a victim of digital photo loss.”
