Kroll® Ontrack, the leading provider of data recovery and legal technololgy products and services, is working with Computer Aid International to safely and securely erase all data from computers donated to the IT charity.

The company’s Ontrack® Eraser  software will ensure Computer Aid can permanently delete any information residing on unwanted PCs and laptops before the equipment is refurbished for use in education, health and not-for-profit organisations in developing countries.

Ontrack Eraser uses custom algorithms to write multiple data strings to the media to ensure that all data is rendered completely unreadable and securely wiped. The software is CESG approved for UK Government use.

Computer Aid is offering Ontrack Eraser data wiping for free to all donors as part of its PC decommissioning service, which guarantees compliance with all UK legislation, including the Data Protection Act, WEEE directive, and the Environment Act.  The charity also takes full legal liability for any equipment it receives and provides certificates of data destruction to all donors.

To date, Computer Aid has professionally refurbished over 160,000 PCs and laptops for use in charities, schools and hospitals in over 100 developing countries, including Zambia, Kenya and Zimbabwe.
