SAN systems responsible for most complicated data recoveries

Kroll Ontrack explains how to minimise SAN disruption

October 04, 2007

As storage area networks (SAN) become more common, Kroll Ontrack has seen an increase in the number of SAN recoveries in the last twelve months.

Businesses of all sizes are starting to adopt SAN systems as their central data storage facility due to increased availability and affordability. As a result, companies without a dedicated in-house team are utilising such systems and are consequently finding that they don’t know what to do in the event of a failure. The most common causes of failure include: User error – an individual may delete a file essential to the system by accident File system failure – the system may become corrupt or unreadable.

Attempts to remedy this without consulting an expert may result in irretrievable data Disk or controller failure – RAID systems or multiple disks on a single LUN may fail, causing problems According to Kroll Ontrack, failures from SAN systems are responsible for the most complicated recoveries due to the size and amount of data stored on them. However, if addressed quickly and in the correct manner, the impact of a failure can be greatly reduced. In order to prevent a full-scale data meltdown, Kroll Ontrack experts have issued the following tips: Avoid forcing an array or drive back online; this may expose it to file system corruption Don’t attempt to replace a second failed drive during a rebuild. If this happens, call the experts Have a good backup plan and always seek advice from a specialist to avoid data being lost for good

Executive quote

“SAN systems are no longer reserved for large enterprises; they are also being used by smaller companies that do not necessarily have a dedicated IT team,” said Phil Bridge, managing director at Kroll Ontrack, UK. “Staff need to understand how the simplest attempts to recover lost data can cause irreparable damage to a system. Specialist expertise should be sought at the first sign of a problem to prevent it escalating into a complete data calamity.”
