SPSS Inc. powers up for Next Generation Utilities Technology Summit

~ Predictive Analytics leader to highlight how utility companies can gain competitive edge ~

May 27, 2009

Utility companies manage and deliver critical resources, essential for strong economic growth and supportive of the quality of daily life. In an increasingly challenging economic and competitive environment, they are seeking every means available to understand current conditions and prepare for future developments. SPSS Inc. will be showcasing how Predictive Analytics enables utility organizations to drive greater value from their customer relationships at this year’s Next Generation Utilities Technology Summit.

The three-day event in Portugal takes place June 23-25 and brings together C-level technology executives from leading energy utilities from across Europe.

SPSS Inc. (Nasdaq: SPSS), a leading worldwide provider of Predictive Analytics software and solutions, is hosting the workshop ‘The Predictive Advantage’ which will explain how its technology allows utility organizations to attract, grow and retain high value customers, optimize collections, manage and mitigate risk, and detect and prevent fraud.

Presented by SPSS experts Colin Shearer, senior vice president of strategic analytics, and Martijn Wiertz, director of enterprise analytics, the workshop will discuss:

- The ‘Predictive Enterprise’ – applying advanced analytics across all areas of the business to enable ‘joined-up’ decision making;

- Strategies for implementing Predictive Analytics – balancing quick wins with incremental development of an effective infrastructure;

- The importance of ‘convergence’ – focusing on the intersection of analytics with business processes and IT architecture;

- Maximizing analytical effectiveness – examining the range of data that can be captured and integrated;

- Unlocking ROI from previous investments – demonstrating how an incremental investment in advanced analytics can maximize ROI from existing systems such as data warehouses and operational CRM environments.

The workshop will cover several case study presentations, describing how various customers in electricity, gas and water are using SPSS Predictive Analytics technology for e.g. demand forecasting, warranty analysis, gas variance modeling, pre-emptive maintenance, improving waste water network blockages, gas loss analysis, customer segmentation, customer service, and fraud. SPSS utilities customers include Powergen, Hamburgische Electricitäts-Werke AG, Yorkshire Water, Luminus, EDF Energy, and Scottish & Southern.

The aim of the NGU Summit is to help senior executives across the utilities sector to address the key challenges facing the industry in these turbulent times and beyond. It gives attendees the opportunity to debate, benchmark and learn from other leaders how technology can be used to create ‘the intelligent utility’.
