UK Government cyber security strategy - reaction from SafeNet

Rob Elliss, director for Northern Europe at SafeNet comments on the Government's cyber security strategy, launched today

June 25, 2009

Rob Elliss, director for Northern Europe at SafeNe“The appointment of a cyber security chief and launch of a national strategy are very positive moves by the Government. Having seen the US do something similar last month, I’m pleased to see the UK is putting information security at the top of the public agenda.

“But we should remain mindful that one person cannot bring about significant, or truly effective, change by himself. He needs the backing of the Government and the support and advice of UK businesses in order to influence policy change and raise the funding required for thorough protection measures.

“The main focus of the role is expected to be on strategic and military networks to combat the threat of cyber terrorism and attacks by foreign states. But the position must also encompass security issues in the private corporate sector, as well as the security of individual members of the public. This is particularly important as we see more and more points of intersection between the three – such as the national ID card scheme involving the collection of individual’s biometric data by privately owned high street organisations. ”
