UK Government cyber security strategy - reaction from SecurEnvoy

Steve Watts, co-founder at SecurEnvoy comments on the Government's cyber security strategy announced today

June 25, 2009

“The rise of cyber warfare and other online threats have finally captured the Government’s attention. However, any cyber security strategy needs to negotiate a delicate balance – between heightening security and maintaining the openness of modern communication.

“One solution is for the Government to support a more decentralised model of security. By empowering businesses and individuals to protect their own networks, the authorities will be able to take advantage of significantly bolstered security from the bottom up. Furthermore, the Government will be able to maintain a ‘controlled openness’ of the Internet in a more realistic and cost-effective way.

“Most organisations realise it’s their own responsibility to prevent cyber attacks. But many still follow the ‘sun screen’ approach, and only apply measures when it’s invariably too late. While the Government can’t claim ultimate responsibility, what it can do is encourage accountability – by putting the schemes in place to support it.”
