SOA projects in danger of losing direction

~ projects could fail to fulfil potential through lack of governance, Software AG research finds ~

November 29, 2007

Nearly three quarters (72 per cent) of IT directors believe that SOA (service orientated architecture) governance is ‘insufficiently addressed’ within their organisation.

Software AG commissioned Omniboss to survey senior IT directors across a range of industries. The results are worrying, according to Software AG – particularly when considered with recent Gartner research, which shows that 80 per cent of businesses will use SOA in mission-critical operations by 2010.

Software AG’s own research highlighted that 96 per cent of UK organisations place SOA in their top five IT spending priority for the next twelve months.

“The demand for SOA is increasing year on year, but it will never fulfil its potential without the processes to harness and manage it,” explained Jim Close, senior VP and country manager at Software AG.

“Used intelligently, we have seen how technology really benefits companies – ensuring employees access to critical information and providing a competitive edge,” Close continued. “However, this can only be achieved if the IT team and business sponsors work together from day one, to ensure a plan is in place to guide the implementation. With SOA implementations, real benefits can only be achieved when there is SOA governance as well.”

“Only when there are controls in place will technology fulflil its full potential – a real support to the business, rather than a potential drain on resources,” Close concluded.
