Siloed systems to be the Achilles' heel for businesses fighting the recession

Inability to share information freely across the enterprise will leave companies vulnerable to downturn, says leading infrastructure provider

March 11, 2009

Business that fail to modernise systems to enable sharing of critical information will fall foul of the recession, Software AG, the leading provider of business infrastructure software, has claimed. The warning was issued following research revealing that 40 per cent of businesses still have over 80 per cent of data stored in separate siloed systems across the enterprise.

“In the information age the ability to share and act on business critical data is not a luxury, it’s a necessity,” said Jim Close, Country Manager, Software AG UK.

“Inability to exchange information across the business will inevitably damage sales leads, duplicate effort, and stifle innovation. This research begs the question, if IT directors are storing up all this information, why aren’t they making use of it?”.

The survey of over 150 IT directors across a variety of industry sectors also revealed the extent of damage poorly managed information can have on the business. 34 per cent of respondents’ cited duplication of effort as a symptom of siloed systems, whilst 24 per cent said it would stifle innovation and sharing of ideas.

The research also revealed that 2009 would be a year of modernisation for many companies seeking to weather the economic storm. Over 20 per cent of companies said that implementing a Service Orientated Architecture would be a top priority, whilst a further 21 per cent would be seeking application modernisation to fight the recession.
