Thales expands mobile portfolio as BGAN goes live

Thales BGAN satellite broadband service and support launches

August 06, 2007

Thales UK’s Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) back-end support system has recently achieved an important milestone in its move into ground-based satellite communications.

The network and customer support capability, which launched on schedule, will enable Thales’ partners and end users to access a dedicated helpdesk and technical resource. Thales will be focusing on providing first-class solutions and support to a global market.

BGAN uses portable, lightweight antennas and Inmarsat’s satellite network. There is no need for specialist technical knowledge – all that’s required is a laptop PC, a BGAN satellite terminal and a telephone handset or headset. Connection is provided at speeds of up to 492kbps and supports simultaneous voice calls and text messaging.

Thales UK’s BGAN capability includes customer support, technical support, sales, marketing and business development staff run from the UK. It is already working with service providers to address reliable mobile voice and data services for customers in export markets, says Richard Deakin, Managing Director of Thales’s aerospace business in the UK.

“The completion of our BGAN support infrastructure is a landmark for us, and one that officially cements a proposition that is quickly gaining traction in all markets that need secure, portable voice and Internet access,” says Deakin. “BGAN is going to be a critical part of the future, and the launch of our network means service providers now have the option to take advantage of Thales’ expertise in technology and communications.”
