US Air Force calls up Zebra to streamline global logistics

~ USAF deploys Zebra RFID printer / encoders to 214 bases around the world to support cargo movements across Europe and beyond ~

November 06, 2007

Zebra Technologies, a global leader in on-demand printing solutions for business improvement, has announced that the company has begun shipments of RFID technology to the US Air Force (USAF). The Zebra R110xi printer/encoders will be a key part of the USAF Cargo Movement Operation System (CMOS) operating at more than 214 locations worldwide.

This RFID initiative is expected to improve overall efficiency and productivity of the USAF’s and Department of Defense (DoD) supply chain and other logistical operations. The new RFID automatic identification technology ensures supplies reach frontline bases quicker and more securely by accurately tagging shipments of all types of supplies from arms and ammunition to food, clothing and medical supplies.

CMOS is a DoD support system designed to automate and streamline logistical processes and cargo movement through the strategic application of Automatic Identification Technology (AIT). The AIT Program Office at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is responsible for the implementation plan to promote the use of RFID automatic identification technology in the USAF.

“The addition of RFID capability to the CMOS system will further enable the already robust system to improve the overall efficiency and productivity of our supply chain, logistics, materials management, and other logistical operations anywhere in the world where military personnel may be deployed,” said Mark Reboulet, PMO USAF AIT Program Office.

“Zebra is pleased and honored to have this opportunity to continue to support the USAF AIT office in the transition from traditional bar coded labels to EPCglobal Gen 2-compliant RFID technology for the CMOS programme,” said Greg O’Connell, government sales manager for Zebra Technologies. “Our Zebra R110Xi Series of high performance RFID printer/encoders continues to be the choice of agencies where the need for highly reliable, high duty cycle devices is required for organizations running mission-critical applications, such as CMOS.”

Zebra products are already used for numerous automatic identification systems used by the US Air Force, US Navy, other DoD branches and armed forces in Europe. In addition, Zebra has products and services to help defense agencies and contractors comply with the DoD Universal Identification (UID) permanent bar code marking requirements.
