Akonix Identifies Steady Growth in IM and P2P Threats in 2008

Security Center tracks 40 attacks in July; average growth rate of 107% per year

San Diego, CA - July 31, 2008 - Akonix Systems, Inc., the leading provider of unified policy management products for instant messaging (IM) and unified communications, today announced its IM Security Center researchers found steady growth in IM and P2P threats through the first seven months of 2008. With 40 unique threats in July on the heels of the year's peak month of 51 threats in June, the current trendline shows a projected growth of 107% for the year.

New IM worms identified this month include MSN-Image-info and Notwanted. Autorun was the most common with two variants. In addition, there were 32 new attacks on P2P networks, such as Kazaa and eDonkey.

During July, Akonix security analysts issued three new policy updates to protect customers against malware using the industry's only dynamic IM malware, spam and protocol update system.
