Akonix Sees IM Attacks Nearly Triple in April

Researchers identify jump in malicious IM activity over March

San Diego, CA - April 29, 2008

San Diego, CA - April 29, 2008 - Akonix Systems, Inc., the leading provider of unified policy and risk management products for real-time communications, today announced its IM Security Center researchers tracked 21 new malicious code attacks over instant messaging (IM) networks in April, a 162% increase from March.

New IM worms identified in April include ArcServe, IMspread and QVOD. IRCBot and Tiotua were the most common with three variants each. In addition, attacks on P2P networks, such as Kazaa and eDonkey, increased 13% this month over last, with 18 attacks.

During April, Akonix security analysts used the industry's only dynamic IM malware, spim and protocol update system to deliver new protective filters to its customers. Akonix Security Update Services automatically push updates to block spyware, worms and viruses. Akonix customers are secure on day zero from each new threat with the in-depth protection and containment features of Akonix's 360° Security for Real-Time Communications(tm).

Executive quote

"With this month's spike in IM attacks, hackers are continuing to penetrate companies as they roll out instant messaging and unified communications platforms for the new year," said Don Montgomery, VP of marketing at Akonix. "Enterprises need to realize that implementing new communication and collaboration tools increases the risk of attack as each new application becomes a new vector for infection."
