Akonix Tracks Malicious IM and P2P Activity in June

Researchers identify 63 attacks over real-time communications networks

San Diego, CA - July 01, 2008

San Diego, CA - July 1, 2008 - Akonix Systems, Inc., the leading provider of unified policy management products for instant messaging (IM) and unified communications, today announced its IM Security Center researchers tracked 63 new malicious code attacks over IM, peer-to-peer (P2P) and Internet Relay Chat (IRC) networks in June.

New IM worms identified this month include Emsenush, Evolym and Noreger. IRCBot was the most common with two variants. In addition, attacks on P2P networks, such as Kazaa and eDonkey, increased by 105 percent this month over last, making up 43 of the 63 attacks.

During June, Akonix security analysts issued new policy updates to protect customers against malware using the industry's only dynamic IM malware, spam and protocol update system. Akonix Security Update Services automatically push updates to block spyware, worms and viruses. Akonix customers are secure on day zero from each new threat with the in-depth protection and containment features of Akonix's 360° Security for Real-Time Communications(tm).

Executive quote

"New, complex attacks using multi-stage worms and file droppers are not only stealing passwords and private data off computers, but they are also capable of replicating over IM, IRC and P2P networks instantaneously, giving remote control to hackers," said Don Montgomery, VP of marketing at Akonix. "So much critical information travels over corporate email, IM and conferencing networks that any organization not addressing the security of all of those applications is potentially courting disaster."
