Antec Offers 10 Tips for Keeping Your Computer Cool This Summer

Company Outlines How To Keep PC Components Cool and Save Energy in the Hot Season

Fremont, CA - August 04, 2008

During summer, PCs tend to overheat, resulting in higher energy consumption. Apart from environmental damage and a rising electricity bill, the increased power use leads to further heat absorption, which can severely damage PC components and cause applications to run slower, crash, or worse. To help alleviate the impact of heat on PCs, Antec, Inc., the leading global provider of high-performance components for the gaming, PC Upgrade and Do-It-Yourself markets, published ten tips on how to keep your components cool this summer:
1.    Switch off your computer when you don’t use it. This simple step is an excellent way to conserve electricity and reduces the heat absorption.
2.    Use an energy efficient power supply (PSU). Energy lost by the PSU will be transferred into waste heat. Truly efficient PSUs have received the 80Plus® certification.
3.    When attaching your CPU cooler, make sure to use the right amount of thermal grease or thermal compound and spread it evenly. This is crucial as the CPU consumes a high amount of energy when it gets too hot.
4.    Ensure your computer is in a cool environment. Direct sunlight and other heat sources like Halogen lights and radiators will make your system sweat.
5.    Make sure your computer has room to properly ventilate. This especially applies to Notebooks – never use them on a soft fabric surface as it can obstruct openings.
6.    Regularly clean your case and change the air filters on your intake fans to reduce dust buildup. A coating of dust can insulate your electronic parts, restrict airflow and impede cooling fans.
7.    Avoid cable clutter to ensure optimal air flow. Tie them together with zip-ties and route them through the cable management system in your case if available.
8.    Use a localized cooling system to keep individual parts chilled if they are not positioned in the regular cool route.
9.    Consider a water cooling system for your processor. This can also cut down on the noise that would be generated by a standard CPU cooler fan.
10.    Notebooks include smaller fans and vents, so a proper cooling system is even more important. A professional notebook cooler can provide huge cooling benefits.
