Reserving Expert Ron Swanstrom Joins EMB

Brings 25 years of experience to expand firm’s reserving practice

Chicago, IL - May 13, 2009

EMB, a global property and casualty (P&C) consulting firm, today announced that Ron Swanstrom has joined EMB as a Senior Consultant in the Chicago office. Swanstrom will play a key role in expanding EMB’s reserving practice, bringing more than 25 years of experience in the industry to this new position. Most recently, he served as Senior Vice President and Senior Actuarial Officer at CNA Insurance Companies.

Swanstrom has a deep understanding in the lifecycle of the reserving process.  He has experience in collaborating with claims, underwriting, and finance departments to develop appropriate responses to the reserve review findings, as well as communicating the results to internal and external parties such as regulators and rating agencies. As a result, Swanstrom will offer the practical experience to broaden the existing consulting services.

Accuracy in reserving practices and understanding the associated variability are crucial to insurance companies, which rely on maintaining an accurate, appropriate level of capital set aside to pay future claims. Reserving is fundamental to understanding the continuing performance of accounts. The symbiotic relationship between pricing and reserving allows business managers to react quickly and to maintain a commercial edge over their competitors.

Swanstrom is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (AAA) and has spoken frequently on various reserving and financial reporting topics. He has served as the Chairperson of the Committee for the Casualty Loss Reserve Seminar, the President of the Midwestern Actuarial Forum and a member of the Casualty Actuarial Society Examination Committee.
