John Edwards Visits Kentucky Town, The Result of Online Competition by Eventful

Tiny American Town Hosts Edwards on October 4 After Winning Eventful’s ‘Demand and Be Heard’ Competition

San Diego, Calif. - October 03, 2007

Eventful Inc., the leading global events website, announced today that the tiny town of Columbus, Kentucky, will play host to presidential candidate Senator John Edwards, after winning Eventful’s “Demand and Be Heard” competition.

Edwards will visit Columbus - population 229 - on Thursday, October 4, to meet with residents and answer questions that were submitted by those that ‘Demanded’ him through Eventful’s site. The event will take place at the Columbus-Belmont State Park, on the banks of the Mississippi.

Edwards will also meet with twenty-four year old Shawn Dixon, a former resident of Columbus, now attending law school in New York City. Dixon kick-started Columbus’ participation in the competition, and lobbied votes from across the country by using Eventful’s viral Demand service.

The Edwards campaign leveraged Eventful’s unique Demand service (www.eventful.com/politics) to empower people from all over the country to Demand Edwards visit their town and answer questions submitted by the Demanders. Thousands of interested voters participated in the month-long competition, held in July. But in a surprising development, Columbus beat large cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas and Seattle for the opportunity to hear Edwards speak in their town. Columbus received help from surrounding communities, who pitched in to rally support for the visit.

The town has planned several special events for the visit, including a Southern-style BBQ, sponsored by Eventful. Kicking things off with the barbeque at 11:30am, Edwards will meet with residents before addressing the group formally at 12:30pm.

Executive quote

Quote from Shawn Dixon: “Eventful’s Demand competition has enabled the residents of Columbus to raise awareness about the issues that really matter to small towns like ours, and to show that we too have a voice. We’re all thrilled that John Edwards is coming to Columbus, and that he sees initiatives like this as a key part of his campaign efforts.”

Quote from Eventful CEO, Jordan Glazier: “We were so excited to see a small town like Columbus win the Edwards Demand competition. It strikes to the core of what Eventful’s Demand service does for voters and supporters of all types, helping foster a real, two-way conversation with the public figures and performers they want to see more of. It is the viral nature of Eventful that helps empower communities like Columbus to make their demands heard.”

Quote from Senator John Edwards: “I am excited by the prospect of meeting the residents of Columbus and hearing what they have to say on the issues that matter most to them. This campaign is about fighting to change a broken system in Washington and building One America, where every single American, no matter where they come from, has the opportunity to work hard and get ahead. And I can’t wait to talk about the issues that are most important to the great residents of the town of Columbus.”
