31% of US Businesses Planning to Reduce Carbon Footprint, Cut Energy Costs by Reducing Service Calls in 2009

40% have green initiatives in place with plans to intensify in the future

Irvine, CA - May 04, 2009

Irvine, CA – May 4, 2009 – For 2009, green IT initiatives are a top priority for 31% of US businesses. Reducing the number of costly, inefficient service calls and optimizing the time of skilled service technicians while maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction are key focus areas for IT managers in the coming year.

According to a recent survey, 43% of 300 IT professionals report dispatching highly-trained service technicians at least once each week. Over 20% do so three or more times per week. More than 40% have already deployed technologies that allow remote access via network-connected equipment, allowing administrators to access, troubleshoot and manage networked devices from virtually anywhere. Remote access and management solutions allow companies to reduce their carbon footprint and save money otherwise allocated for fuel and travel. It also increases productivity, allowing companies to immediately engage skilled service technicians with the customer versus the inherent delays and inefficiencies of deploying them to customer sites.

Contributing to the importance of decreasing fuel costs, analyst firm Yankee Group also predicts that money spent on truck rolls will surpass $6.5 billion by 2010 in the IPTV industry alone. This points to the growing interest among companies for remote device management solutions to help them save on such expenditures.

Additionally, a recent study by Forrester Research, “Market Overview: A Slowing Economy Won't Slow Down Corporate Green IT Initiatives,” finds that green IT initiatives show no signs of slowing down in a weak economy, with 10% of businesses planning to increase their overall IT expenditures in 2009. Additionally, 67% said that the main motivation of taking this direction is to decrease energy costs.

Less than half of companies, 40%, say they have already implemented green initiatives and 31% plan to focus on such policies in 2009. Whether a byproduct of cost saving due to decreased travel, or from an effort to ease a company’s impact on the environment, such response indicates increasing business interest in eco-conscious practices.

The survey was commissioned by Lantronix, Inc, a leading provider of secure, remote device networking and data center management technologies.
