Washington State University Deploys Proofpoint on Demand to Protect 30,000 Students, Faculty and Staff from Spam and Viruses
Proofpoint’s SaaS email security solution delivers the outstanding anti-spam accuracy, scalability and flexibility needed to defend against today’s complex email security threats

A nationally recognized research university with more than 24,000 students, WSU currently manages more than 20 email domains, serving approximately 30,000 email users. Over the past few years, the university’s email traffic has skyrocketed, growing tenfold as its student population increases and inbound spam volumes continue to rise. The university’s previous on-premises email security solution began to suffer under the additional load, causing significant mail delays and requiring a large amount of intervention by WSU’s IT staff. As the complexity of spam and virus threats grew, the previous system became less and less effective in accurately detecting and blocking spam.
Faced with an urgent need to improve the performance of its email infrastructure, WSU turned to Proofpoint, based on the company’s reputation for delivering comprehensive email security solutions with outstanding anti-spam accuracy, high performance and ease-of-use.
During a 30-day test of the Proofpoint appliance, the university found that the system delivered near-perfect accuracy against spam and offered all of the administration and end-user features—including personalized, easy-to-use email- and web-based quarantines—that the university required.
After the evaluation phase, WSU chose to protect the university’s entire email infrastructure by deploying Proofpoint’s SaaS solution, Proofpoint on Demand.
Both WSU’s IT department and the email users it serves have been impressed with the performance of Proofpoint on Demand.
The Proofpoint on Demand solution continues to catch over half a million spam messages per day, blocking them before they reach WSU’s various downstream mail servers. As the university’s needs and challenges continue to evolve, WSU expects to adopt additional Proofpoint offerings.
